Pillars of Great Branding

designing a strong logo

Consumer trends, software updates, and buyer motivations all come and go, but one constant remains... the importance of great branding. A strong brand can set a business apart, resonate with audiences, and build lasting loyalty. At Brand It Consulting Group, we believe that successful branding is built on a foundation of core pillars. When a new client walks through our door wanting a new logo, it may surprise you to know that we don’t jump straight to design. There are a lot of preceding questions and considerations before one even picks up a pencil to sketch new logo ideas.

Here are a few things that we consider to be pillars of great branding...

1. Strong Brand Identity, Defining Your Brand's Core

The foundation of any great brand starts with a strong identity. This involves clearly defining your brand's core values, mission, and vision. It's about understanding who you are as a company and what you stand for. A well-defined brand identity helps create a unique persona that distinguishes you from competitors. It’s essential to dig deep into what makes your business unique and why your audience should care.

For example, we’re going to treat the brand identity of a local non-profit very differently than that of a Fortune 500 data security company. Long before we consider color and shape and where to advertise, we want to drill deep into a company's ethos. Why do you do what you do, and who do you do it for? This core identity guides every decision we make, from the projects we take on to how we interact with clients and the public.

2. Using the Brand Identity to Establish a Point of View and Voice

Once your brand identity is established, the next step is to use it to develop a consistent point of view, tone, and voice. These elements communicate your brand's personality and perspective to your audience. Your brand's voice should be consistent across all channels, whether it's formal, playful, authoritative, or friendly.

Consider your target audience when crafting your brand voice. For example, a tech startup targeting young professionals might adopt a modern, conversational tone, while a luxury brand might use a more sophisticated and elegant voice. The key is consistency, as this helps to build trust and recognition among your audience.

3. Creating a Memorable and Adaptable Logo

A logo is often the first visual representation of a brand that people encounter. It's a critical component of brand identity and serves as a symbol of your brand's values and essence. A memorable logo should be simple, unique, and adaptable across various platforms and mediums.

Think about iconic logos like the Apple apple or Nike swoosh. These logos are not only visually appealing but also carry a wealth of meaning and recognition. Although it’s difficult to reach the level of recognition that those brands have, the intention behind the design should be the same. When designing your logo, consider how it will look in different sizes, colors, and contexts. It should be versatile enough to work on everything from business cards to billboards and adaptable to future branding updates or changes.

4. Choosing a Strong and Consistent Color Palette

Colors evoke emotions and associations, making them a powerful tool in branding. A well-chosen color palette can enhance brand recognition and communicate your brand's personality and values. For example, blue often conveys trust and professionalism, while red can evoke excitement and energy.

Consistency in using your chosen color palette is crucial. It ensures that all brand materials—from your website and social media to packaging and advertising—look cohesive and reinforce your brand identity. At Brand It Consulting Group, we advise clients to choose a primary color palette and complementary secondary colors that can be used flexibly across different materials.

5. Launching and Maintaining Branding Control

The final pillar is about bringing all these elements together and maintaining them consistently across all touchpoints. A strong brand is cohesive and consistent, making it instantly recognizable to consumers. This means ensuring that your brand identity, voice, logo, and color palette are used consistently across all marketing channels and materials. Think of the communication that’s blasted to customers or potential customers every day (social media posts, direct mail, email blasts, etc). All of these things should match visually and holistically.

It is also important to regularly review and update your brand guidelines. As your business grows and evolves, your branding may need to adapt. However, any changes should be carefully managed to maintain brand integrity and avoid confusing your audience.

Great branding is not a one-time project but an ongoing commitment to staying true to your brand's core while remaining adaptable to change. At Brand It Consulting Group, we specialize in helping businesses build and maintain strong, consistent branding that resonates with their audiences and stands the test of time. By focusing on these key pillars, you can create a powerful and enduring brand presence that sets you apart in the marketplace.
